Croatia boosted their chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup knockout stages thanks to their 1-0 win over Panama.
The Blazers opened their World Cup in defeat to England and knew only a win would do to get them back on track. It was a hard-fought victory in a game with very little chances. There were just 14 shots shared between the two sides, with Panama having eight to Croatia’s six. But Croatia won the battle with shots on target, at two to one.
One of those shots on target came from Ante Budimir, who was brought on at half-time to try and change things. It took Budimir less than 10 minutes to make his mark, after a sustained period of Croatian pressure.
Knowing they needed to get a result, Panama upped their attacks and had more momentum for large parts of the second half. But they could not get the crucial equaliser. As a result, Panama have been eliminated from the World Cup, now unable to finish anywhere other than bottom.
Croatia sit third on three points but know their last-32 destiny is in their own hands, with second-placed Ghana up next. Panama end their World Cup campaign against England.
